Schumann's Salon

23.11.2024
19:00 - 21:00

The programs of the “Schumanns Salon” concert series are as varied as the musical life of the Schumanns in Inselstraße. It is always a moving experience to hear and interpret music where Clara and Robert Schumann once made music, premiered their own works and played compositions by their companions and friends.

On this evening, the soloists of the Gewandhaus Orchestra will perform in the Schumann Hall: 1st concertmaster Sebastian Breuninger, deputy 1st concertmaster Julius Bekesch, principal violist Chaim Steller and former 1st principal cellist Christian Giger together with pianist Yuka Kobayashi. The program includes two great works of chamber music. Gabriel Fauré's Piano Quartet in C minor op. 15 is considered one of the most important and best-known French chamber music works of the 19th century. This lively and fresh composition was already met with great enthusiasm at its premiere in 1880. Robert Schumann devoted himself primarily to chamber music in 1842. For his wife Clara's birthday, he presented her with the manuscripts of the String Quartets op. 41. Clara came to the conclusion: “ (...) I can say nothing about the quartets except that they delight me in every detail. (...)”
